Football has been revolutionized in the past ten years. The increasing commercialization of the football industry, the transformation of clubs into Plcs and media company ownership threaten to weaken the links between clubs, supporters and their local communities. The British government has recognized the need to protect the interests of fans from these market forces and to compel clubs to be democratic and accountable to their supporters. Supporters Direct is the initiative which provides legal and practical advice to supporters' groups in forming trusts that allow them a greater say in how their clubs are run. This book explains, for the first time, the genesis of Supporters Direct and its likely impact on the organization of football clubs, and uses key case-studies to show supporters' trusts in action: Northampton Town FC, AFC Bournemouth, Celtic, and the BSkyB-Manchester United wrangle.
