Sarah Chamberlain

BA History and Archaeology

Sarah Chamberlain enjoyed her undergraduate studies so much she has decided to continue studying, and has even inspired her Dad to study at university for the first time.

Aged 21, after studying nursing, Sarah enrolled on the BA History and Archaeology degree at Birkbeck, University of London. She was always fascinated by history – a passion she has inherited from her Dad – and she was delighted her studies included archaeological digs.

Sarah said: 'I loved the studying and really enjoyed my time at Birkbeck, especially the archaeological digs that were part of the course. One of the sites was a medieval manor house in Gravesend and we uncovered pottery, a kiln and man-made fish ponds. It is exciting to see how people lived in the past.'

Sarah was able to combine her work as a legal secretary with her course because she was highly motivated and greatly enjoyed her studies. She said: 'If you are going to be studying in the evenings and weekends, you really need to love the subject. That was exactly the case for me.'

Sarah was also very grateful for the £4,000 bursary she received from Birkbeck.

Sarah is now a bank operations associate and she hopes to establish links with cultural charities by forging a career in Corporate Social Responsibility. Sarah will also be starting an MA in Museum Cultures at Birkbeck this autumn (2013).
