Title of thesis

  • My thesis describes the poor women and men who wandered the streets of fast-growing London, hawking everything from oranges to oysters, capons to cabbages. Their cries were famed and they were often in trouble. But we lack a complete picture of who they were, what they bought and sold, how many they numbered, and where they stood in society. The story of street sellers tells us how Londoners picked up their daily bread, passed through the city’s space, and treated the underclass that kept them fed.
