    Biography

I am an archaeologist and landscape historian specialising in early medieval Europe. Outside Birkbeck I split my time between the UCL Institute of Archaeology, where I am Lecturer (Teaching) in Medieval Archaeology and the Society of Antiquaries of London, where I am editor of The Antiquaries Journal, Archaeologia and the Societies' monograph series.

My research has concentrated on Anglo-Saxon civil defence, and the structure of governance and administration in early medieval states; published as Beyond the Burghal Hidage: civil defence in Anglo-Saxon England (with John Baker, 2013), Landscapes of Defence in the Viking Age (with J. Baker and A. Reynolds, 2013), and Polity and Neighbourhood in Early Medieval Europe (with J. Escalona and O. Vésteinsson, 2019). My latest book, Peasant Perceptions of Landscape: Ewelme Hundred, South Oxfordshire, 500-1650 (with Stephen Mileson, 2021) is an analysis of how ordinary medieval and early modern people experienced and perceived their material environment and constructed their identities in relation to the places where they lived. I am currently completing work on two major Leverhulme Trust projects: Lordship and Landscape in East Anglia CE 400–800 (UCL), and People and Place: The making of the Kingdom of Northumbria 300–800 CE (Durham University).

I have also been editor of Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine since 2014.
