Research Interests
- My research interests are ancient historical demography and the ancient family within their social, economic and cultural contexts in the Greek and Roman worlds, with special focus on Egypt.
Areas of research supervision
- Ancient historical demography and population history; social and economic history of Hellenistic and Roman Egypt
- If you are interested in pursuing research in any of these areas, you should first read our advice on how to apply for MPhil/PhD research before submitting an application.
Publications
- I am writing a book, Population and Society in Roman Egypt, which explores aspects of birth, death, marriage and mobility through census returns, papyrological and archaeological material from the province.
- I have also edited a volume Demography and Society in the Graeco-Roman Worlds. New Insights and Approaches, with Claire Holleran (2011, Cambridge).
- I have a number of book chapters currently in press and am interested in areas which bring demographic analysis to the forefront of aspects of the history of the family in Hellenistic, Roman and early Byzantine Egypt: children and childhood; young, adult in-marrying women and their authority; and widowhood, widows and divorcées.
