Six History, Classics and Archaeology Students Awarded Eric Hobsbawm Postgraduate Scholarships

Birkbeck College is pleased to announce the success of six of our students in winning Eric Hobsbawm Postgraduate Scholarships, named in memory of one of the greatest historians of the last century.

From 1947 until his death in 2012, Eric Hobsbawm was a loyal member of Birkbeck College. The Scholarships have been set up to encourage the next generation of talented historians to pursue original, high-quality and exciting research in history by assisting financially with study and research costs.

They have now been awarded for the 2015-16 academic year. Three were awarded to new full-time MA students: Sean Newman, Polly McKinlay and Imran Jaffri. Three others were awarded as research grants to current MPhil/PhD research students: Emma Lundin, working on ‘Connections between Swedish Social Democratic women and women in the ANC, 1960-1994’; John Siblon, researching ‘war memory and the construction of hierarchy: representations of black colonial servicemen in the aftermath of the Great War’; and Morwenna Blewett, studying ‘the use and exclusion of art restoration professionals by the Nazi kleptocracy’.

Congratulations to them all! We look forward to advertising for submissions to the 2016-17 round of Eric Hobsbawm Scholarships in due course.

The Eric Hobsbawm Scholarships have been made possible thanks to many donations from his friends and former students. Birkbeck College gratefully acknowledges the help and support of the Hobsbawm family.
