Inaugurating the PhD history exchange programme between Birkbeck and the EUI

David Bryant, a doctoral student in the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology, will be the first exchange student to visit the Department of History and Civilization at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence in the autumn term, 2014.

David says: ‘I work on Spanish history during the Franco era, looking in particular at Spanish involvement in international and European health and medicine. My research is part of Dr Jessica Reinisch's Wellcome Trust-funded project, “Reluctant Internationalists,” which investigates the history of public health and internationalism in twentieth-century Europe. Spending a term at the EUI will give me an amazing opportunity to work with other students and researchers from across Europe, and I'm really excited about the chance it will give me to broaden my understanding of European and transnational history.’

This programme was initiated by Professor Lucy Riall of the Birkbeck History department, who is currently professor of the Comparative History of Europe at the EUI. The aim is to bring together the unique intellectual environment offered at the EUI with Birkbeck’s premier position in London. The EUI is dedicated to research and to the teaching of doctoral students from all over the European Union (there are no MA or BA programmes); and it specialises in the comparative, transnational and global history of Europe over a long-term perspective. English is the language of communication and teaching, but students can also take classes in all the major European languages. As well as sending students to Florence, Birkbeck will be hosting up to two EUI history students in future years for one term each.

Those interested are advised to check the EUI¹s departmental website and then contact Dr Sean Brady (s.brady@bbk.ac.uk). Interested eligible candidates should contact Dr Brady no later than Wednesday 18th March 2015, for consideration of exchange sudentship in either autumn term or spring term, academic year 2015/16.
