We are pleased to announce that, for October 2015 entry, Birkbeck has a limited number of new £10,000 postgraduate scholarships. These scholarships are for students progressing from a full-time undergraduate degree to a part-time Master’s degree starting in 2015-16.

To be eligible for the scholarship you must be:

  • starting a 2-year part-time taught Master’s degree in 2015/16
  • domiciled in the UK/EU
  • progressing from an undergraduate course for which you were charged the higher tuition fee (applicable since 2012–13)
  • studying at postgraduate Master’s level for the first time.

How to apply

If you want to apply for this support, you must follow these steps:

  1. submit an application for your intended course
  2. submit an application for the Postgraduate Support Scheme

Further details

Each scholarship has a value of £10,000. This will be awarded as £5000 in each year of study. The scholarship will cover the fees for the programme, and any remainder will be paid direct to the student as a maintenance payment at the start of the summer term.

Applications will be assessed and prioritised according to the eligibility criteria on a monthly basis. The monthly deadline is the first Friday of very month. Awards are limited and, when all awards have been allocated, we will close the scheme. You are strongly advised to apply as soon as possible.

Students will be notified via email whether they have been successful.

Successful students will be requested to confirm if they accept or decline their award. Where a student declines their award, or fails to confirm acceptance by the notified deadline, or is not offered a place on their intended course, awards will be redistributed to reserve candidates.

PSS Awards are limited in number, and eligibility does not guarantee receipt of an award. Each month, applicants will be prioritised according to the following criteria:

  • Students progressing from a Birkbeck undergraduate programme
  • Disabled students (registered as disabled and/or in receipt of DSA during their UG degree).
  • Level of maintenance grant whilst studying for their UG degree. (Applicants will be prioritised based on amount of maintenance grant received. All undergraduate part-time students and full-time EU students ineligible to receive maintenance grants must be able to demonstrate equivalent household income.)
  • Expected to achieve First-class honours (1st) or Second-class honours, upper division (2:1) for their UG degree
  • Please note that students from EU countries outside the UK who studied their UG degree in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland plus the following categories of students are not eligible:
  • Scottish students who studied in Scotland
  • Welsh students who were provided with tuition fee grants.
  • NI students who studied in NI.

Conditions

  • You must meet the eligibility criteria and be able to demonstrate this.
  • You must have applied for your programme of study prior to submitting an application for a scholarship PSS Award.
  • If you are in receipt of the PSS Award, you are not entitled to receive other Birkbeck financial support (e.g. Alumni discountAlumni Fund Postgraduate Opportunity Bursary)
  • Awards are conditional on your being admitted to your intended programme of study.
  • Awards awarded on the basis of the academic achievement criteria (i.e. obtaining a 1st or a 2.1) will be conditional awards.
  • Birkbeck has a small number of part-time Master's programmes for which the fee is higher than £5,000 in each year of study.  In these cases, the scholarship is limited to £5,000 and the remainder of the fee will remain payable.
