Dr Debbie Challis

Debbie completed her PhD on the acquisition and reception of classical antiquities in museums in England, 1830-90 at Birkbeck in 2005.

She is Adult Learning Office at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaelogy and gives public lectures at museums and galleries, as well as working as a researcher for the BBCs Archive Project.

She has a number of publications including a chapter on the Greek display at the Crystal Palace in Britain, the British Empire and the World (eds.) Jeffrey A. Auerbach and Peter H. Hoffenberg (Ashgate: 2008) and ‘Attic and Diplomatic: Charles Newton and the emergence of criticism on ancient art’, in Carol Adlam (ed.), Art Criticism 1700 1900: Emergence, Development, Interchange in Eastern and Western Europe (Peter Lang: 2009).  Her most recent book is From the Harpy Tomb to the Wonders of Ephesus: British Archaeologists in the Ottoman Empire (Duckworth, 2008).
