Taught postgraduate degrees

London University's tradition of taught Master's degrees has been carried on at Birkbeck for many years. We offer a wide range of MA programmes: all have some unique elements, but many optional courses are offered to more than one degree programme.

  • All the programmes are available to students studying part-time in the evening, as well as those able to study full-time. (The MA in Classical Civilisation can only be studied on a part-time basis).
  • All the MA programmes include a combination of taught courses, assessed by coursework, with a dissertation of 12-15,000 words.
  • The MA in Historical Research has courses on research skills and methods, computing, and historiography.

Please select the course that you are interested in from the list on the left-hand side, and click for more information.

Postgraduate Funding

Research Preparation Master’s scheme (RPM) awards, AHRC

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) offers funding for MAs in the 'Research Preparation Master's scheme (RPM)'. This funding scheme is designed for candidates who intend to go on to doctoral research after their MA. The AHRC offers funding for both full-time and part-time modes of study.

Applicants who wish to apply for the AHRC’s' Research Preparation Master's scheme (RPM)', must have their college application for a place on a MA programme, and their application for AHRC funding, submitted to Registry by Monday 15th February 2010. Applicants must mark their college application form clearly that they intend to apply for an AHRC award.
