Sofia holds a degree in Land Management Engineering and a post graduation in GIS from the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. She has collaborated with diverse research institutes in Europe including research units from the Technical University of Lisbon (Centre for Hydrosystems Research, Center for Urban and Regional Systems, and the Landscape Architecture Research Center), the Portuguese National Laboratory of Civil Engineering, Leeds University, and Utrecht University. Her research focused on integrated watershed management planning, integrated impact assessment of land use and transport policies, and the design of landscape sustainability tools with the support of integrated modelling tools and GIS. She has also been a teaching assistant at the University College London Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering department on the topic of sustainability.
Her doctoral research at the Centre for Avanced Spatial Analysis (University College London), financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, consists of the development of a dedicated land use and transport policy sustainability impact assessment tool for the Lisbon Metropolitan Area with the support of system dynamics, agent based and spatial interaction modelling approaches, and GIS. She is also an independent consultant on land use and environmental planning, sustainability policy assessment, and dynamic modelling and simulation.
