Field class and fieldwork trips for 2012/13

Year 1 Field Trip

The 2013 first year field class will be held on the Isle of Skye, co-led by Mr Simon Drake and Dr. Andy Beard. This field class is an important introduction to geological mapping and field techniques counting as 15 credits on the Assessed Field Techniques 1 module.

Dates – from the Tuesday 2nd April 2013 to the Saturday 13th April 2013. For accommodation we have grouped booked the Dunollie Hotel, Broadford, Isle of Skye, IV49 9AE, for 11 nights at a reduced rate of £43 per person per night including breakfast and evening meal. (Total cost for accommodation £473). Means-tested financial support may be available for students, please contact Registry for details.

We strongly advise students to fly to Inverness Airport on the 2nd April 2013 where minibuses with staff drivers will available to complete the journey to Isle of Skye. We usually depart from the Inverness airport after the arrival of the last flight from the London airports, usually about 2.00 pm. All students will have to make their own travel arrangements to Inverness Airport. Those travelling by overnight coach or train can catch the frequent shuttle bus from Inverness City (near the main line train station) to Inverness Airport. Students who wish to travel directly to Isle of Skye please inform the co-leaders of their intentions so that we can inform the hotel of possible early arrivals.

A non-refundable deposit of £100 is required to cover the cost of minibus hire and fuel. Please make cheques payable to Birkbeck and give them to Maz Iqbal or Simon Drake. Full information on equipment requirements will be given at a later date.

If you want to attend the fieldclass, please inform us by the DEADLINE of 21st December 2012 so that we can inform the hotel of final numbers in the New Year.

Year 2 Field Trip

The dates for Assessed Field Techniques 2 to Greece are as follows.

Depart Thursday 21st March 2013
Return Sunday 31st March 2013

A coach will transfer us from Athens airport to the hotel (~2hr transfer) leaving in the late afternoon or early evening on the 21st March (the time for the coach is not fixed and depends on flights).

The hotel is The Kalamaki Beach Hotel, Isthmia, near Corinth.

The costs are

Single:                     63,00 Euros
Double for single:   75,00 Euros
Double / Twin:        90,00 Euros

Above prices are per room, per night and include breakfast and dinner buffet
and all the taxes. The hotel can offer 8 single rooms and the rest will be double for single use, or double/twin occupancy.

Students will be required to pay £100 towards the cost of the coach that we will use throughout the trip. This should be paid to Maz by December 10th. Students should book their own flights. Please inform Steve Jenkins of your exact flight details and/or travel arrangements.

Year 3 Field Trip

The 3rd year field class to Cyprus will be held from Monday March 25th to Thursday April 4th inclusive. March 25th and April 4th will be travel days, and the trip will run in between these days. The trip will be run by Stephen Edwards, Charlie Underwood and Karen Hudson-Edwards. Please could those intending on coming on the trip do the following:

(1) Please book your flights to arrive and depart from Larnaca airport in Cyprus on the dates given above.

(2) Please give Maz a cheque for £100 pounds as a contribution towards travel whilst on the trip.

(3) Please email Karen Hudson-Edwards (and copy to Charlie Underwood) to let us know that you intend on coming on the trip.
