Student support

Personal tutors

  • Personal tutors are members of our academic staff, who will meet regularly with you throughout your course. All of our undergraduate and postgraduate students are assigned a personal tutor at the start of each academic year. Please check the student handbook on the current students information page to find out the tutor for your year group.
  • How can your tutor help?
    • Your personal tutor is there to advise and support you with all sorts of problems. You'll be able to talk to your tutor about things like:
    • modules and your course of study
    • difficulties meeting deadlines
    • exam revision and study concerns
    • timetabling difficulties
    • problems outside of Birkbeck that may have an effect on your studies
    • Our personal tutor system means you'll always have an academic to turn to if you need help and advice.

Induction evening for new students

  • At the beginning of each academic year, we arrange an induction evening for our new students.
  • By attending our induction evening, you can learn about our facilities and meet the academic and administrative staff who will support you through your studies.
  • You will also be able to receive more detailed information about your chosen course, and may have the opportunity to meet past and current students.
