GEDS approved as training provider for Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment

MSc Environment & Sustainability and MSc Climate Change Management students eligible for Associate Membership from 2014

For over five years, the Department of Geography has been training professionals who tackle sustainability and climate change challenges in various sectors. Part-time study alongside demanding professional careers has enabled our graduates of the MSc in Business Strategy and Environment and MSc Climate Change Management programmes to move into fulfilling careers in various sectors, from Government (for example the Department for Energy and Climate Change), to business (e.g. within Costain), to carbon focussed organisations such as the Carbon Disclosure Project and Refido Ltd and the third sector (e.g. Save the Children).

However, in an increasingly challenging job-market, we wanted to improve the employability of our graduates further. To do this we decided to partner with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). Following a detailed assessment of a significantly redeveloped pair of programmes, the new MSc Environment and Sustainability and redesigned MSc Climate Change Management have been approved by IEMA. This means that students are now eligible for Associate Membership upon successful completion of four modules within the seven that comprise each programme. This applies to all our students from October 2014 onwards.

IEMA has recently merged with the Global Association of Corporate Sustainability Officers (GACSO). It is a non-profit membership organisation that promotes best practice standards in environmental management, auditing and assessment and aims to be the international leader for environmental and sustainability professionals. IEMA supports professional development of individuals involved in the environmental and sustainability profession in the public, private and non-governmental sectors.

Benefits of IEMA membership include access to: job advertisements, regional and national events, publications, workshops, negotiated deals for professional indemnity insurance, website and special interest groups. Associate membership (AIEMA) is widely recognised as the minimum professional achievement for anyone who is working in an environmental role and has responsibility for environmental issues.

We are very excited about this new partnership and look forward to seeing the benefit to our students.
