Why study this course at Birkbeck?

  • Of interest to anyone working, or intending to work, with children in service provision or policy development, particularly in culturally diverse settings, or who has an interest in cultures of childhood.
  • Develop the skills needed to produce high-quality independent research.

This programme aims to provide you with a critical historical and international perspective on the construction of childhood, and to enable you to understand childhood as a site of social inequalities that are racialised, classed and gendered.

What will I be studying?

The programme is made up of two core modules, two option modules and a dissertation.

The two core modules are:

  • Social Studies of Childhood: Key Concepts and Issues
  • International Political Economy of Childhood.

Option modules include:

  • Visual Cultures of Childhood
  • Children, Rights and Childhood.

Relevant option modules may also be taken from those offered by the Department of Psychosocial Studies and School of Law, with the agreement of the programme director.

Dissertation research in a relevant field is agreed with the programme director.

Classes in Research Methods for Dissertation are taught with students from the MSc Development Studies, which gives you the opportunity for academic exchange with students working in the development sector.
