Johanna, originally from Poland, is studying anthropology at degree level after completing Birkbeck's certificate.
'I was concerned because English is my second language. So it was great to come to Birkbeck first and see if I was able to do it before I committed myself to a full degree. I did a short course in academic English for foreign students before I started my certificate and that was very useful.'A friend of mine suggested Birkbeck to me because I was working full-time during the day and wanted to do my studying in the evening. I had a very demanding job, and there was no way that I would have been able to support myself if I'd chosen to do full-time study. I really liked the flexibility that Birkbeck gave me.'
