‘Postgraduate Support Fund’ for Postgraduate Research Students in SSHP (2014/15)

Thanks to a very generous benefactor’s donation from the estate of Ms. Evelyn Pullin, the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy is delighted to announce the establishment of a ‘Postgraduate Support Fund’ for postgraduate research students.

New and existing postgraduate research students within SSHP are invited to apply for financial assistance for research-related costs; this includes expenses associated with specific training needs; fieldwork or research trips; and conferences, workshops or other academic events where the applicant is presenting a paper or chairing a session. Use of the award will not normally be allowed for purchasing books or computer software/hardware.

Awards will not be approved in excess of £500 per student (per annum).

Applicants are expected to have already used any alternative sources of funding available to them (for example, departmental allowances; allowances that are part of ESRC, AHRC or other externally-funded studentships; or other College awards and bursaries, see: http://www.bbk.ac.uk/mybirkbeck/finance/studentfinance/res_finance/res_named ).

How to apply:

Applicants are asked to submit three documents:

• a one-page statement of the research expenses being applied for. This statement should include (i) a breakdown of the sum requested and (ii) a brief justification of how the research expenses relate to the applicant’s research / wider academic profile.

• a two-page personal statement that includes a basic CV and a description of the applicant’s academic research interests.

• a brief (300 word max.) supporting statement from the applicant’s primary supervisor(s), justifying the amount sought in relation to the applicant’s research project.

Applications should be sent to SSHPpgrsupport@bbk.ac.uk. Queries can also be sent to the same address.

When to apply:

The deadlines for applications for the academic year 2014/15 are January 7 2015 and July 7 2015.

The awards will be judged on an individual basis by a School-level committee convened for this purpose and applicants will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible after the deadline.
