About us
Since 1 August 2009, Birkbeck has had a new structure, consisting of five schools that comprise a total of 19 different academic departments. The School of Geography is now known as the Department of Geography, Environment and Development Studies (GEDS) within the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy.
Our research
- We have a strong research focus that is reflected in the fact that all our academic staff have been included in all RAE submissions.
- Much of our research is funded by the UK research councils, EU and other public and third sector organisations.
- Each research centre in our department draws on a broad range of staff expertise to support a programme of research projects, seminar series, workshops and public events.
Our courses
- Our innovative Geography, Environment and Development Studies courses will help you gain up-to-date specialised skills to give you a competitive edge in the workplace.
- Over the years, we have built up our research strengths, and we now offer a number of courses across a range of disciplines.
- At postgraduate level, our courses are organised into areas of research strength that share a common set of core modules, specialist courses dedicated to each particular degree, and a choice of options.
- We also run a number of courses in conjunction with other departments.
