From 1 August 2003 a college travel insurance policy has been taken out to cover Birkbeck staff and students travelling outside of the UK on Birkbeck business. This would include Research trips, conferences and seminars as long as they relate in some way to your employment at Birkbeck.
Benefits of the policy
The benefits are:
- Medical Expenses up to £1 million
- Baggage up to £2,000
- Money up to £1,000
- Worldwide cover (but not on journeys within the UK)
Exclusions
The following exclusions apply:
- £25 excess
- pregnancy or childbirth within one month of expected date of birth
- dental or optical expenses unless as a result of an emergency
- any journey undertaken against the advice of a qualified medical practitioner
- persons over 75 years
- journeys over six months
- thefts not reported to local police within 24 hours
- loss or damage not reported to transport carrier
- flying other than as passenger
Before you travel
Before you travel you will need to have a Business Traveller Card. The card contains the emergency phone number to ring and the reference number to quote.
You will need to inform the Insurance/Management Accountant if you are travelling to or through a "Disturbed Area". The insurers' current list of disturbed areas are:
- Afghanistan
- Chechnya
- Iraq
- Israel and the Occupied Territories
- Yemen
and any other country which the Foreign Office advises against travel.
Before you travel please consider whether the above cover is sufficient for your particular journey. If not, then you will need to arrange alternative insurance cover yourself.
