Update Spring 2020 Graduation

As the safety of our visitors, students and staff is of paramount importance to us, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Spring Graduation ceremonies, which were due to take place between Tuesday 28 and Thursday 30 April 2020. We have made this decision on the basis of advice from the Government to limit public gatherings at the current time.

We understand that this decision is likely to disappoint and inconvenience you and would like to convey our apologies for this.

We are rescheduling the ceremonies for later in the year to ensure that we can congratulate you and celebrate your achievement in an appropriate way.


Frequently Asked Questions
When will a new date be scheduled?
We have added extra days to our annual Autumn Graduation in November 2020 and intend on rescheduling your ceremony to then. The ceremonies will now take place between Monday 2 - Thursday 5 November, and invitations with information on the exact date and time will be sent to you approximately two to three months in advance of the ceremony.


If I cannot attend in November, can I defer to another graduation ceremony in 2021?

Yes, you will be able to defer your graduation to either our Spring or Autumn Graduation ceremonies in 2021, but please contact us on by the end of this year, so we can ensure that you are added to the invitation list for those ceremonies.


How will I receive an invitation?
All correspondence will be via email to your email address as listed on your MyBirkbeck profile. Please ensure we have the correct contact details.


I have already purchased guest tickets through Ede & Ravenscroft. Will these be refunded?
Yes, all guest tickets bought will be refunded, but you will need to contact Ede & Ravenscroft on 01223 734 759 or log in to your account on their website

You will need to do this by Sunday 19 April 2020.

Tickets will not be automatically transferred to a future ceremony.


I have already booked official photography and / or a gown through Ede & Ravenscroft. Will this be refunded?

You can transfer your existing booking to the new ceremony date. If you would like to do this, you will need to let Ede & Ravenscroft know by calling or emailing them directly to confirm the date of the new ceremony date at least 21 days before the ceremony so that they can process the transfer.

Alternatively, if you are undecided as to whether you would like to attend the rescheduled ceremony, you will be able to request a refund and place a new order online or over the telephone, once you have made your decision.

Your new graduation date and time will be emailed to you by the Birkbeck Graduation Team approximately two to three months before the new ceremony date.


Will I still receive my degree certificate?
Yes, if you haven’t already received it, the certificate will be sent to you by the Diploma Production Office, University of London, regardless of whether or not you choose to attend the ceremony. This will happen automatically and you do not need to do anything. Should you have any queries, please contact the Diploma Office directly on 


Will I get a new visa support letter?
As part of the process of booking for the rescheduled graduation ceremony, you will be able to request a new visa support letter, should you need it. If you have any questions about this, please contact us on


Will the University reimburse me for any travel and visa costs?
We recognise that postponing our graduation may have affected your travel arrangements to the UK. Whilst we are sympathetic to your circumstances, the decision to postpone Graduation, due to the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19), was taken in order to safeguard your health, as well as that of others attending the ceremony. The outbreak of coronavirus is outside the University’s control and for this reason we regret that we will not be able to compensate you for travel expenses or other costs that you may incur due to this cancellation.

If you intended on travelling to the Ceremony by air, we advise you to contact your airline for information about cancelling or delaying your trip to the UK. Similarly, if you have travel insurance, we advise you to contact your provider to find out whether you are covered for these circumstances.


Can I still order graduation specific merchandise if I am unable to attend a future ceremony?

Yes. An external Supplier, Campus Clothing, would be delighted to fulfil your graduation ‘Class of’ garments featuring your name and those of your fellow graduates and send them to your home address. Simply visit to place your order.

All graduate names and courses will be automatically added to the 'Class of 2020' hoodies and other memorabilia.

If you do not wish for your name and course to be included on merchandise, please email the graduation team by Sunday 5th April.
