The evening takes as its starting point two short research films on the photojournalist Bert Hardy and his work in the 1940s for the illustrated weekly newspaper, Picture Post. These innovative films, made through a collaboration between Lynda Nead (Birkbeck, University of London) and John Wyver (Illuminations and University of Westminster) explore the social, material and aesthetic qualities of the photographs and ask how we might use film to consider the nature of the photographic image in this period. In recent work, Laura Mulvey has described her method of stilling film to uncover those ‘ineffable’ qualities that might otherwise be overlooked in viewing the moving image. With contributions from film and photography historians we consider the creativity that can be discovered between stillness and motion and the histories that can be told.
