A documentary portraying the Iranian capital through its suburbs, Hasthi Tehren draws on issues of urban transformation, population growth, and policy development. Four different suburbs of Tehran’s are explored cinematically as spaces of transition, sublimation suspension and delay.
The film is influenced by Hasthi. Meaning eight in Farsi, Hashti is an architectural feature of traditional houses in Iran, an octagonal vestibule, which leads into different rooms and house zones house. It is an antechamber between andaruni (the interior) and the (the exterior) biruni. Envisioning Tehran as a house in itself, the city’s outskirts appear as Hashthis as in spaces of containment, waiting and circulation. Hasthi Tehran is a film about the urban areas where the controlling forces of urban development lose influence, definitions are blurred and suspended; places in which city, landscape, nature, and construction meet with everydayness.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A session Daniel Kötter (director)and Alireza Labeshka (curator) in conversation with Pooya Ghoddousi (geographer, UCL)
