Culture Wars and the 'Prevent' Programme. How should Universities respond? A talk and discussion hosted by School of Arts with Anwar Akhtar
Few topics are as contentious as the government’s 'Prevent' programme, seen by some as state spying or bullying of Muslim communities, part of a new emboldened state-sponsored, oppressive cultural hegemony, supported by far right think-tanks and commentators.
Others argue that 'Prevent' is a necessary, difficult public policy process, to deal with the very real threats of terrorism and violent extremism. And, as recent experience shows, it seeks to address extremism in schools, universities, and far right groups, not just among religious groups.
Anwar Akhtar, Founder/ Director of The Samosa Media project, film maker, theatre producer and journalist, will give his own thoughts on these issues and look at the context for students, academics, curriculum and give his recommendations on if and how 'Prevent' can or should be reformed.
