Legal Practice Conversation (Autumn Term 2017) - James Whitaker

When:
Venue: Birkbeck Main Building, Malet Street

No booking required

The Legal Practice Conversation series aims to provide students with first-hand insight into how law works in practice and an opportunity to ask a legal practitioner about careers in law.

James Whitaker is a senior associate at Mayer Brown, a leading international law firm. He is based in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group of the London office, specialising in insurance-related litigation and advising on policy coverage issues. He is also a Birkbeck alumnus!

James will be talking with Daniel Monk (Professor of Law at the School of Law, Birkbeck) about his career and the day-to-day life of working as a solicitor.

The conversation will also focus on the Kenyan Court of Appeal judgment in Kenya Pipeline Company Ltd v Glencore Energy (UK) Ltd (Civil Appeal Number 67 or 2014), which he is currently involved with. It is a complex, international case that is due to be heard before the Supreme Court of Kenya. The case involves the alleged misappropriation of large quantities of a refined petroleum product, gasoil, worth in excess of $40 million.

For media coverage of the case see here.
