Mapping Inequalities In Prisoner Healthcare Worldwide

The Institute for Criminal Policy Research at Birkbeck, University of London is holding a free international conference on prisoner healthcare. Mapping inequalities in prisoner healthcare worldwide is funded by the Wellcome Trust/Birkbeck Institutional Strategic Support Fund.

We will welcome speakers from a wide range of organisations including: the International Committee of the Red Cross, Public Health England, Prison Reform Trust, Penal Reform International, Release and HMP Grendon. Papers will be presented by academics researching prisoner healthcare across several disciplines, in Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Thailand, the USA and the Netherlands.

Topics will include:

  • Gender-specific standards to improve women prisoners’ health and wellbeing
  • Harm reduction strategies to reduce exposure to infectious diseases
  • Health-focused interventions along the whole ‘custody journey’
  • The specific health needs of older prisoners and people with mental health problems
  • The importance of healthy ‘social climates’ in prisons
  • The latest global prison population data from the World Prison Brief

There will be six panel sessions spread over the two days, followed by a final session for reflections on the whole conference and discussion of future areas for research. Delegates are encouraged to attend both days but single day attendance is possible.

Outline Programme - Day 1: 8 November (10.30 – 17.00)

  • Session one (10.30 to 12.45): International perspectives on prisoners’ health
  • Session two (13.45 to 15.15): Health risks and opportunities at the start of the custody journey
  • Session three (15.30 to 17.00): Can prisons be ‘healthy social climates’?

Outline Programme - Day 2: 9 November (9:45 – 16.30)

  • Session four (9.45 to 11.40): Harm reduction in the prison setting
  • Session five (12.00 to 13.30): Challenges and opportunities in prisoner health: case studies from the Netherlands, Hungary, Brazil & Thailand
  • Session six (14.20 to 15.40): Older prisoners: the growing challenge of providing effective care
  • Close (16.00 to 16.30): Reflections on conference and questions for future research
