When:
Venue: Online

No booking required

In this talk Tony Capstick will focus on how graduates of Applied Linguistics might apply their knowledge of language and communication in different business and professional settings. In the first part of the talk he focuses on careers available to graduates of Applied Linguistics and some of the reasons for choosing Applied Linguistics for careers other than those relating to language education. In the second part of the talk he will look in more detail at the career trajectories of those who started work in language education but have developed this interest by taking up consultancy opportunities with organisations such as the British Council and international NGOs. He will end his talk exploring the nexus of policy, language teaching and materials design with particular reference to online materials such as the Futurelearn MOOC Migrants and refugees in education: A toolkit for teachers which he co-authored as well as offline teacher development materials used by UNHCR in the Middle East. He ends with an overview of his textbook, Language and Migration, and how he approached the daunting task of pulling together such an interdisciplinary project by drawing on expertise – and experts – from Applied Linguistics as well as related disciplines.

Dr Tony Capstick is Lecturer in TESOL and Applied Linguistics at the University of Reading. He carries out research on language use and language education in resource-low environments and his main focus is multilingualism and migration, particularly in refugee settings. He was Lead Educator of the Futurelearn MOOC Migrants and Refugees in Education: A toolkit for teachers having previously co-authored the report 'Language for Resilience' for the British Council. His new textbook for Routledge Language and Migration was published in 2020.
