Critical thinking is the cornerstone of studying at university. It is an academic skill that encompasses other academic skills (such as reading, note-making and writing for academic purposes), and plays a key part in achieving high grades. This session will consider what is meant by critical thinking and what is expected of you as a critical thinker. You will also encounter the key questions with which to approach critical reading and writing in the initial stages of your studies.

Critical thinking 1 is part of a series of two workshops. The second workshop is called 'Critical thinking 2: Building and evaluating academic argument' and can also be booked on the events booking system.

Please note this workshop is for enrolled Birkbeck students only, and you will require your student login details to access the workshop.

This online workshop will take place on a Blackboard Collaborate link within the Birkbeck Study Skills Moodle Module. If you have booked, you will be emailed another link as a reminder to your registered email address (so please remember to check your junk mail.)

This workshop will be repeated numerous times throughout the academic year.

The central study skills team offers a variety of study skills and writing skills workshops.

This is one of the study skills workshop series, which consists of:

1. Time management and organising your studies
2. Procrastination, perfectionism and prioritisation
3. Critical thinking 1 – what is critical thinking?
4. Critical thinking 2 – building and evaluating academic argument
5. Reading for university
6. Notemaking for academic purposes
7. Mindmapping
8. Summarising and paraphrasing effectively
