Torture Then And Now: The Role Of The Judges
Speaker: Professor Conor Gearty (LSE)

Abstract: Legislation currently before Parliament plans to make it much easier for British forces operating abroad to escape liability under UK law for serious crimes, including torture. How can such a proposal have come about? In this talk Conor Gearty traces how the role of the judiciary in relation to cases of torture has changed over the years, and how this has precipitated the government’s proposals.

The event will be chaired by Professor Costas Douzinas.
