Speaker's biography:
Jean Seaton is Professor of Media History at the University of Westminster, has written a volume of the Official History of the BBC and is Director of the Orwell Foundation. She runs a pioneering and unique foreign office Chevening programme that works across contested borders in South Asia. She is the author of, among others, Carnage and the Media: the Making and Breaking of News about Violence, Power Without Responsibility: the Press and Broadcasting in Britain and Pinkoes and Traitors: the BBC and the nation 1974-1987.
She has written widely on the history and role of the media in politics, wars, atrocities, the Holocaust, revolutions, security issues and religion as well as news and journalism and social media. She broadcasts regularly on historical, political and cultural matters.
Jean is on the editorial board of The Political Quarterly. She is a founding member of several active media NGO's that hold the media to account, including Full Fact and the previously the Reuters Institute

Since Dr George Birkbeck created the London Mechanics’ Institution in 1823, the organisation that is now Birkbeck, University of London, has been the gateway for ambitious people to study in the evening. In so doing they change their own lives - and make an immediate impact on business, the economy and our entire society.
In February 2020 Birkbeck marked 100 years since the College officially became part of the University of London.
