Academic Writing: Sentence mechanics and punctuation

Even when we have relatively well-developed writing skills, there are still things we can do to improve the clarity and style of our writing. This workshop presents the fundamentals of sentence structure, including ways to improve sentences in terms of length, clarity, conciseness and variety. It will also discuss how to use the most common punctuation marks correctly.
For students unable to attend, the resources from this workshop can be found in section 3.3 of the Birkbeck Study Skills Moodle module (login required), along with a wide variety of other study skills resources.
This is an Academic Writing Workshop run by the central Birkbeck Study Skills service. All students from any Birkbeck school are welcome to attend.
