Science Week 2018: Do you really know yourself? Investigating the Self-representation of the Body and Mind

When:
Venue: Birkbeck Clore Management Centre

No booking required

Speaker: Dr Lara Maister, Lecturer

Our self-representation has many different facets. One important aspect focusses on properties of the mind, and contains our thoughts and beliefs about our characters, personality traits, likes and dislikes, and social relationships. Another, quite different aspect of our self-representation focusses on the properties of our bodies, and concerns our body image, how we visualise and experience our own bodies and our physical appearance.

I will talk about these different aspects of the self-representation, and introduce psychological experiments demonstrating how we can change the way the self is perceived, and how this alters our interactions with others. I will also introduce a novel experimental method enabling people to generate computerised self-portraits, which reflect how they picture their faces and bodies 'in their mind's eye'. This gives us a unique window into how accurately people perceive themselves, and gives us fascinating clues about their self-beliefs.

This event is free and open to the public, but you need to book your place through Eventbrite.
