Quantitative Research Methods in Action Day

Venue: Lecture Theatre B01, Clore Management Centre Building Birkbeck College Torrington Square London WC1E 7HX
Booking details: Free entry; booking recommended

MPhil/PhD students and academic staff, at Birkbeck and other Colleges, are invited to attend an event hosted by Birkbeck’s Department of Organizational Psychology. This ‘Quantitative Research Methods in Action’ day will take place on Thursday 18th January 2018.

The day, which is being organized by the Quantitative Methods Group in the Department of Organizational Psychology at Birkbeck, will feature a mix of presentations and panel discussions by academic staff, and current and recently completed PhD students from the department. The theme will be to introduce relatively emerging approaches in statistical analysis (e.g. Bayesian analysis, and G theory) and to examine some statistical controversies (e.g. the usefulness of significance testing).

We are also delighted to announce that the keynote address will be given by Professor Andy Field, Professor of Child Psychopathology at the University of Sussex. Professor Field has published over 80 research papers, 29 book chapters, and 17 books mostly on statistics and child emotional development. His ability to make statistics accessible and fun has been recognized with local and national teaching awards (University of Sussex, 2001, 2015, 2016; the British Psychological Society, 2007), a prestigious UK National Teaching Fellowship (2010), and the British Psychological Society book award (2006).

Our aim is to deliver an informal introduction and overview of some of the emerging quantitative methods currently being used in the research undertaken in the department. There will be plenty of opportunity to talk to staff and PhD students about their work, and to find out more about these methods and what they can contribute to knowledge and understanding in organizational and management research as well as in other disciplines.
