At Birkbeck, University of London we appreciate that education isn't linear, and some of the biggest barriers to accessing university is confidence, especially around academic study skills. Things like note-taking, academic reading and critical analysis, to name a few.

Enter Plan B!

What is Plan B and is it for me?

Plan B is a FREE programme for all prospective students, you do not need any prior university or study experience. The programme is designed to help boost confidence and develop transferable academic study skills. It consists of two parts, in one session:

  1. Interactive academic study skills workshop
  2. Taster lecture, to put into practice the academic skill just developed

What is this Plan B session all about?

6 6.40pm: Academic study skills workshop Academic Reading

In this session, Fleur Rothschild, Learning and Development tutor within the School of Arts will be focusing on:

  • What is special about reading at University?
  • Preparing for Academic reading
  • Effective academic reading strategies for you

6.50 - 7.30pm: Taster lecture 'Nurturing resilience in yourself and others'

This taster lecture by Ana Da Cunha Lewin, an academic within the School of Science, will be referencing your newly developed academic reading skills by looking at resilience.

Resilience is much in the news these days, with it being associated with better mental health and well-being and better outcomes in school, work and relationships. Using this as a foundation, the taster lecture will be focusing on:

  • What is resilience?
  • Why some people seem to be more resilient than others?
  • How we do nurture this quality in ourselves and in other people?
  • What Psychological research has taught us about resilience
  • Simple strategies to support the development of resilience in both ourselves and in those that we live alongside
