Necropolitics, Biopower and the Crisis of Globalisation

In the countries of the Global North, the choice for Brexit in the UK and the election of Donald Trump in the US indicate a crisis of neoliberal globalisation, now traversed by a conflict that opposes 'globalists' to the 'preservers of sovereignty'. In the Global South, we are witnessing the end of the cycle of progressive governments in Latin America, and of neo-developmentalist agendas as well. The split between 'globalism' and 'sovereignty' announces a horizon of war that can produce in the Northern metropoles the civil violence (necropolitics) that is characteristic to the Global South. At the same time, the biopolitical struggles of the immigrants in the North and of the poor in the Global South indicate a possible path out of this impasse. The conference explores the points of confluence in these biopolitical struggles in the North and South.
To allow this reflection on necropolitics, biopolitics and the crises of globalisation, the conference brings together scholars working across a wide range disciplines, from political theory and philosophy, to sociology and psychosocial studies, to psychoanalysis, anthropology and postcolonial studies.
