Does justice policy listen to criminological research? Experiences of speaking truth to power. An event to mark the retirement of Professor Mike Hough
Mike Hough spent 20 years as a government researcher in the Home Office and a further 23 years doing policy research in universities. He has around 300 publications. In this lecture he will reflect on when his research has had an impact, and when it has sunk like a stone and the reasons for this. Despite the recent lurch of Western democracies into post-truth politics, he remains slightly optimistic about the value of properly conducted empirical research with direct implications for policy. The event will also include responses from Ben Bradford, Gloria Laycock, Juliet Lyon and Julian Roberts, all of whom have worked with Mike and have extensive experience of the uses of research in policy.
The discussion, chaired by Professor Stewart Motha, Birkbeck School of Law, will be followed by a drinks reception. The event is free but booking is required.
