'The authors have wasted their time...': Genre features and style of anonymous peer reviews
Abstract
The anonymous peer review is an unpublished pre-publication review which evaluates research articles submitted to journals. This type of review plays a special role in the genre landscape of Anglophone research by performing a 'gatekeeping function', i.e., ensuring the appropriate quality of research and sustaining ethical standards of investigations. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an analytical description of the main genre features and stylistic peculiarities of anonymous peer reviews. The research is based upon a corpus of English texts which evaluated the papers in the fields of applied linguistics and applied mathematics submitted to international journals within the last 10 years. The methodological framework of the investigation combines Bakhtinian vision of genre, Swales' move analysis, and a functional stylistic perspective developed within the East European linguistic context. As the results of this study show, the genre of the anonymous review is marked by the presence of several distinct functional moves, axiological imbalance and explicit didactic orientation. The interaction of didactic and evaluative statements in the context of the review produces a special rhetorical accentuation of this genre which may account for emotionally painful reactions of its recipients '' the authors of the reviewed papers. However, the awareness of its role and conventions can help reviewees to perceive this genre in a more positive light, as a valuable source of professional assistance and enlightenment.
