Birkbeck's Big Ideas is a series of thought-provoking free public lectures, designed to inspire and bring world class academics from Birkbeck to the local community, with this latest installment from Dr Stefan Engels, of the Department of Geography.
The Earth is currently warming as a result of human-induced increases in atmospheric greenhouse gasses, and academics argue that the ongoing climate change is so fast and so large that we've now entered a new geological epoch: the Anthropocene. But how do we know whether the Earth's climate has changed to a fundamentally new state, and are the ongoing changes really faster and larger than what we consider to be natural variability? In this lecture, Stefan Engels will introduce the audience to the field of palaeoclimatology (reconstruction of past climates), focussing on abrupt climate change during and following the last ice age as seen through the eyes of insects.
