Birkbeck's Big Ideas is a series of thought-provoking free public lectures, designed to inspire and bring world class Birkbeck academics to the local community, with this latest installment from Daniel Monk, of Birkbeck's School of Law.
Stories about children getting into trouble for breaching school dress codes frequently hit the news. Recent examples include the following:
'Boy, 12, fights 'racist' school ban on his cornrow hair'
'Teenager isolated over cancer charity haircut'
'Muslim boys told their beards breach school rules'
'School sends girl, 14, home for wearing a Sikh bracelet'
'More pupils sent home in uniform row'

Rather than argue about what children should or shouldn't be allowed to wear to school, the aim of this talk is to think about why it seems to matter so much and what these conflicts and school dress codes might be able to tell us about childhood, education and politics in contemporary Britain.
The event is FREE and open to all, but please note that seating is allocated on a first come first served basis. Registration and refreshments start at 6pm and the talk will commence at 6.15pm.
