Andrew and Kathleen Booth Lecture 2017

When:
Venue: External

No booking required

Until 2016, the Andrew Booth Memorial Lecture was delivered annually by a distinguished computer scientist to commemorate Professor Andrew Booth's work in creating some of the world's first electronic computers at Birkbeck and also his pioneering research into machine translation. From 2017, the annual Andrew & Kathleen Booth Lecture will honour the role of his wife, Kathleen Booth (née Britten), on designing and programming these early computers. For more details of their work, please see the Short History of Computing at Birkbeck.

We are delighted to announce that this year's lecture will be given by Dame Stephanie Shirley, CH, DBE, FRS, FREng. Dame Stephanie studied for two postgraduate years at Birkbeck under Dr Andrew Booth and became an honorary Fellow in 2002. Having arrived in Britain as an unaccompanied child refugee in 1939, she started an early software company as a company of women, a company for women. This went public in 1996 and employed 8,500 people when it was acquired and delisted in 2007, valued at nearly three billion dollars.

Since her nominal retirement, she has founded four charities and taken each into sustainability; she is enjoying investing her hard earned wealth in IT (her professional discipline) and autism (her late son's disorder).

The Andrew and Kathleen Booth Lecture 2017 will be a stimulating evening attended by alumni, friends and staff of Birkbeck's Department of Computer Science and Information Systems. If you would also like to attend the event, please register your interest with the BEI Events Officer, Lucy Tallentire including the following details:
