Key facts

• You can apply, and start studying for, a language MPhil / PhD at any time during the year. However, if you wish to apply for a scholarship, you will need to apply by certain deadlines. Find out more about our Birkbeck scholarships.
• Full-time study: our PhD degrees are available on a full-time basis. The full-time option is ideal for language students wishing to complete their language research in a shorter, more intensive period.
• If you have been admitted to the UK on a student visa, you may only study as a full-time student or, in certain circumstances, as a mixed-mode student.
• Part-time study: our part-time PhD degrees normally take one to two years longer to complete than full-time study. The part-time option is perfect for those who are managing careers or other commitments alongside their languages, linguistics and culture research.
