Research in histories and philosophies

The department has research interests in political history, cultural history, the history of ideas, philosophy and psychoanalysis.

Colleagues specialise in 20th-century colonial/post-colonial and military history, cultural memory, the history of ideas and of European intercultural relations, the psychoanalytic tradition in relation to literature, the poetry and rhetoric of the early modern period and the history of representations of gender and sexuality.

We are at the centre of several research clusters with extensive national and international links:

  • colleagues from the department are on the steering committees of an AHRC-funded research project entitled After the Wall: Reconstructing and Representing the GDR, with links to universities and museums in Germany
  • a British Academy-funded international project on the reception of German Idealism, which will lead to a series of conferences and publications in Britain, Germany and the United States.

We do not see 'histories' and 'philosophies' as discrete alternatives.
