Aquatic Environment Group

Aims

Birkbeck School of Geography's Aquatic Environment Group aims to collaborate with institutions that are at the forefront of either a field observation/laboratory or a modelling approach.

Projects

Research this group has been and is currently involved with include:

  • landslide modelling over the long term, in association with the University of Bonn, and landslide monitoring in the field and laboratory with  the University of Wellington, New Zealand;
  • monitoring ecological issues with the University of Heidelberg;
  • complementary state-of-the-art modelling developed in conjunction with the University of Bristol (e.g. Brooks et al. 2002, 2004; Lloyd et al. 2002);
  • the coupling of monitoring and modelling of beach water-table dynamics with the University of Queensland (e.g. Baldock et al. 2001; Foote et al. 2002; Horn and Li 2004; Li et al. 2004);
  • the development of advanced earth observation methodologies for environmental modelling programmes (Elsner et al. 2003) in association with the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Coastal Research Unit) and NERC's Airborne Remote Sensing Facility;
  • beach-cliff interactions involving one of our postgraduate students;
  • the role of vegetation in landslide mitigation in conjunction with the University of Bristol;
  • the University of Wellington field monitoring platform.
