My main research interests are the training and development of theatre directors, producers, writers and actors; and developing and directing new pieces of theatre, particularly with innovative uses of music and plays based on real lives.

I have written a book for emerging directors, based on my experiences as a theatre director and as programme director of the MFA Theatre Directing, called, ‘Directing: A Handbook for Emerging Theatre Directors’, published by Methuen, London.

I am a Council member of Drama UK, the organisation that oversees the professionally recognized training of actors and stage managers in the UK and chair the board that accredits acting and technical programmes at UK drama schools.

I continue to practice as a freelance director, directing existing plays at regional producing theatres and developing new plays with writers and through workshop productions.

At Birkbeck we have established a Centre for Contemporary Theatre, which provides a forum for debate and collaboration between leading theatre practitioners and leading academics about the nature, function and future of theatre in the contemporary world.
