Writing and Research

Katherine Angel is a writer and Lecturer in Creative Writing. She is the author of Unmastered: A Book On Desire, Most Difficult To Tell (2012), which was published by Penguin/Allen Lane in the UK and by Farrar Straus & Giroux in the USA, and was translated into several languages. Daddy Issues (Peninsula Press, 2019) probes the figure of the father in contemporary culture, through film, literature, and psychoanalysis. Her writing and research focus on sexuality, psychiatry, feminism, and gender in the twentieth- and twenty-first centuries.

Katherine has a PhD in the history of psychiatry and sexuality from the University of Cambridge’s History and Philosophy of Science Department. After her undergraduate degree in philosophy, she studied at Harvard University with a JH Choate Fellowship. Since her PhD, Katherine has held a Wellcome Trust Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Warwick; a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at Queen Mary, University of London, and a Lectureship in Creative Writing at Kingston University. She joined Birkbeck in February 2017.

Teaching

Katherine convenes the MA in Creative and Critical Writing at Birkbeck, and teaches fiction and non-fiction, as well as topics in gender, feminism, and critical theory, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. She welcomes applicants for PhD supervision particularly in areas relating to sexuality, gender, and feminism, medicine, psychoanalysis, and psychiatry--whether applicants are interested in critical, creative, or hybrid writing (she supervises prose forms including literary non-fiction, autofiction, autotheory, memoir, lyric essay, amongst others).

Katherine welcomes applicants for PhD supervision particularly in areas relating to sexuality, gender, feminism, the body, and in a range of prose forms, including non-fiction, narrative and non-narrative memoir, and essay.

Events

Katherine regularly speaks about her work and reads from her writing at cultural institutes, university conferences, and art galleries. Events have included readings at Dixon Place and Community Bookstore in New York; Somerset House, Standpoint Gallery, Foyles, The Wellcome Collection, LSE’s Forum for European Philosophy, and The Serpentine Gallery in London; Golden Thread Gallery in Belfast; the Castlefield Gallery in Manchester; The Central Library in Vienna; the International Literature Festival and Humboldt University in Berlin, and Oslo University. She also regularly interviews and is in conversation with other writers at literary events; recent events have involved Brian Dillon, Gwendoline Riley, Emily Witt, and Sarah Howe.

Katherine collaborates with performance group The Blackburn Company, with whom she has performed a live art reading, Unmastered Remastered, at Nottingham Contemporary Art, at Glasgow Centre for Contemporary Arts, and at the Institut Francais in London.
