Areas of research supervision

I welcome enquiries from students wishing to pursue postgraduate work in the areas of fin-de-siècle literature, culture and society; Victorian emotions; the Victorian novel; nineteenth-century feminism; science (especially Darwinian evolution and psychology) and literature; eugenics and biotechnology; and alternative forms of faith and belief.

I am currently supervising projects on W. T. Stead, New Journalism, and nonconformity; representations of ‘Little People’ in late-Victorian literature and science; D. H. Lawrence as a critical reader; corporeality and identity in the Victorian after-life; Henry Arthur Jones and the renaissance of the English stage; a cultural history of the Victorian chaise-longue.
