Areas of research supervision
I am currently main/co-supervisor of five doctoral projects on: ‘Sexology, literature and homosexuality in fin de siècle German and English fiction’, ‘The British Contagious Diseases Acts and the Regulation of Prostitution in India, 1850s-1900’, ‘Homophobia in Discourse and Fiction since the 19th Century’, ‘Figurations of Time in 20th and 21st Century Feminism’ and ‘Autobiography, Trauma and Contemporary Lesbian Writing’.
I am happy to consider enquiries from potential doctoral students, especially on topics relating to:
- Aspects of nineteenth and early twentieth century literature and culture
- Gender, writing and the cultural history of sexuality, 1800-1950
- Histories of identity
- Translation and cross-cultural exchange
- Discourses of modernity, civilisation and 'race' in science and culture
- Contemporary fiction especially lesbian, gay and queer writing, and world literature by women.
