Past events

Since the Centre was founded in 2007, we have welcomed distinguished speakers from across the spectrum of theatremaking, criticism and scholarship.

One of our regular formats is the Theatre Conversation, in which we invite theatre critics and practitioners to debate topics of mutual interest. Public audiences have engaged in conversation with Aleks Sierz, David Edgar, Diane Torr, Grayson Perry, Jack Thorne, Janelle Reinelt, John Stokes, Josie Rourke, Karen Fricker, Lyn Gardner, Phillip Ridley, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Richard Bean, Roy Williams, Samuel West, Sean Holmes, Simon Scardifield and Simon Stephens.

We also host public performances of new theatre work.  Past events include Kate Elswit and Megan Nicely's The Animation Project, the dangerologists' Work Songs, Tom Lyall's DEFRAG_, performances by Theatre North, jazz opera Vice directed by Rob Swain, and a rehearsed reading of Steve Waters' radio drama Scribblers. As part of Birkbeck's annual festival Arts Week, we present theatre created by students from BA to PhD, including performances of new work in progress at our Scratch Night. Other student performances include The Acts Between, created by BA students in response to 43 Gordon Square, and Blake's Dream: Vala or the Four Zoas, an immersive sound-work devised by MFA students from a text by William Blake.
