Dan McVeagh

Dan's role is to support students within Economics, Mathematics and Statistics in their studies. He is available two and a half days a week to meet with students and to discuss their needs. He can offer advice on a variety of maths skills, including:

  • Pre-algebra
  • Formulae
  • Equations
  • Functions
  • Basic calculus
  • Basic statistics
  • Basic data analysis

Dan works closely with Birkbeck staff to ensure that support structures are in place to provide you with every opportunity to be successful in your studies.

Working with academic and administrative staff, he will ensure the implementation of an agreed programme of activities aimed at increasing student retention. The role also involves the dissemination of information about good practice throughout the Department and the providing of advice to the College on student retention.

Dan has an MSc in Mathematics from Birkbeck is a qualified teacher and has a specialist teaching qualification in Teaching Mathematics in the Adult Sector.

Support Dan offers

One-to-one support: these sessions last a maximum of 1 hour and need to be booked in advance. You will be asked to provide some information about what you would like to work on in advance, so you can make the most of the tutorial. If you cannot come in for a session in person, please contact Dan to organize a Skype tutorial. Please be advised that the Skype tutorials are in the pilot stage.

Module specific workshops: these are organized by Dan and your module lecturers. They will be advertised on your Moodle module page and some of them might need to be booked in advance, so please look out for them. You might need to provide some questions for these sessions in advance. If there is a session attached to your module, all the details will be communicated to you via your lecture, Moodle or e-mail in due time.
