Piergiorgio Alessandri
MSc Economics, and PhD Economics

I have always been interested in the themes at the intersection between economics and finance, and I decided to take an MSc at Birkbeck because the school has a very strong tradition in this area.

I had high expectations, and the course met them completely. The quality of the teaching in our programme was consistently high, and tutors and teachers were always available to us.

When I moved on to the PhD programme, I started exploiting two other great advantages of the department: its high ratio of lecturers to students, and its strategic position in Bloomsbury, which makes it extremely easy to interact with staff and fellow students at UCL and the LSE. I found this environment exceptionally stimulating, and I thoroughly enjoyed my learning experience.

The PhD was my key to the world of central banks and policy making. After completing my thesis I spent the summer in Frankfurt at the European Central Bank, where I worked on an extension of one of my papers, and then came back to join the Bank of England. None of this would have been possible without the intense, enriching and now fondly remembered years I spent at Birkbeck.
