BSc Economics and Business

Programme Director: Stephen Wright

On this course you will be studying with students on our BSc Economic and Social Policy and with others on various Management courses. The structure of the course is that for the first two years, you will learn core topics in economics and business. In years three and four you can pick from a wide range of modules offered by the departments of Economics and Management. This structure is fairly flexible and is particularly useful if, as a mature student, you are a little uncertain about your interests and aptitudes. By ensuring core knowledge in the first two years you are then able to tailor the degree to reflect your interest and experience.

You need to be prepared to undertake some quantitative study as much of Economics demands at least some level of quantitative competence. To ensure you build this competence we have several core modules devoted to helping you establish confidence in this area. However, if you do not wish to pursue this approach further, you can take less quantitative orientation in the options.

If you have not studied maths for some time, you could investigate some of Birkbeck’s short refresher courses in basic mathematics which can be taken prior to the start of the degree.

The course is built on the philosophy that you obtain broad proficiency across business and economics disciplines. This breadth is provided by the core modules in years one and two. These are compulsory and must be passed to proceed to the third year. In the third and fourth year you must choose a total of six Level 6 modules from a broad range of approved options.

Foundation Route

This BSc Economics and Business with Foundation Year is designed for those applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria for direct entry to our BSc courses. The year will develop your core knowledge and skills in economics and business management and prepare you to successfully complete a degree in a range of business-related disciplines. The core modules deliver key, cross-disciplinary knowledge in business and economics and you can then decide, via your choice of options, whether to continue studying an interdisciplinary mix or to take a more specialist route.

Upon successful completion of the one-year Foundation Year, you will automatically progress on to our three-year, full-time evening study BSc Economics and Business. You need only complete one application and you enrol onto one course.
